Replacing your fencing

Starting out with replacing your fencing can be daunting at first, so here are some tips to get you started.

Is it time to replace your fencing? If your fence posts are looking rotten, then do replace them straight away. Not doing so is a false economy when you think about the damage that could be sustained should a post fail.

If have to replace a post, do try and limit any re-working of the new post as this will break the treatment barrier. If you cannot avoid cutting a post, be sure that you do NOT put the cut end into the ground, because this will void any warranty and reduce its longevity.

Be sure to check your fence post end caps, as they are often overlooked and they play an important part on any fencing run. While they are a pleasant decorative touch, post end caps also help to prevent moisture ingress through the top of the post, thus extending its life.

If you need to replace panels or boards, do consider a gravel board to protect the bottom of the panel. You can also keep it raised off the ground a little in order to reduce moisture ingress.

If your fence does not consist of panels, you’re likely to have a run of closeboard fencing, for which you can purchase replacement rails and featheredge boards if so required.

Another good idea is to check your gravel boards as these will protect the bottom of the boards. Like fence posts, it’s recommended that you make sure your fencing run is finished with capping rails to help towards extending its usable life as well as making it look smart.
