Walford Timber was established in 1945 and has been manufacturing and supplying timber products from our sawmill in Herefordshire for more than 80 years. Our PermaTimber® pressure treatment process

All Walford Timber wooden gates are treated using our proprietary PermaTimber® process, which forces a preservative solution deep into the timber under controlled pressure. This exceeds standard industry treatment levels and delivers a 15-year guarantee against fungal decay and wood-destroying insects — significantly longer than the guarantees offered by most gate suppliers. The process complies with all current UK health and safety regulations and uses treatments that are safe for use around children, pets, and wildlife once dry.

How to choose and buy the right wooden gate

Buying a wooden gate involves more than choosing a style you like the look of. Getting the sizing, timber type, and fittings right from the outset will save you time and money. Here is a straightforward step-by-step guide.

Measure your opening accurately

Measure the width of the opening between the gate posts at both the top and the bottom — openings are rarely perfectly square. Measure the clear height required. Allow a 10 – 15 mm gap at each side and approximately 50 mm clearance at the bottom for a standard installation. For double gates, note that each gate leaf should cover half the total opening width.

Choose the right gate type

Wooden pedestrian gates (also called garden gates or side gates) are typically between 900 mm and 1,200 mm wide and 1,000 mm to 1,800 mm tall. Wooden driveway gates (entrance gates) are typically 2,400 mm to 3,600 mm wide as a pair. Wooden field gates are usually between 2,400 mm and 4,800 mm wide and built for heavier agricultural use.

Select your timber and finish

For most domestic gates, pressure-treated Scandinavian redwood is the practical choice — durable, cost-effective and widely available. If you want a gate that requires less maintenance and will last 30 years or more, consider iroko or European oak. Our gates are available in pressure-treated green or brown finishes as standard, and can be painted or stained with any colour using a quality exterior wood paint.

Specify your gate posts and fittings

Gate posts should be set at least 600 mm into the ground (or 900 mm for taller, heavier gates) in concrete. Walford Timber stocks timber gate posts, tee hinges, band-and-hook hinges, auto gate catches, bolts, and latches — everything you need for a complete installation. We can advise on the correct hinge size for your gate weight.

Order standard or bespoke

Standard-sized gates are available to buy online and are dispatched quickly from stock. If your measurements do not match a standard size, contact us for a made-to-measure quote. There is no significant price premium for bespoke sizes in most cases, as we manufacture on-site and can accommodate custom dimensions as part of our normal production schedule.

Made-to-Measure & Bespoke Wooden Gates

Our bespoke service includes:
  • Custom widths and heights
  • Special design styles (arched tops, integrated panels, etc.)
  • Reinforced frames for heavy use
Because we manufacture on-site at scale, we can deliver bespoke gates at competitive prices without compromising on quality or durability. Whether you require a single made-to-measure gate or multiple bespoke units for a development project, we can support your needs.
Clients choose bespoke wooden gates when:
  • They have non-standard openings.
  • They require architectural matching.
  • They want gates that complement the landscaping.
  • They need extra security or reinforcement.
Our expertise in timber processing and manufacturing means we can translate your drawings, measurements or ideas into finished gates that look exceptional and perform reliably.

Frequently asked questions about wooden gates.

How long do wooden gates last?

A pressure-treated wooden gate will typically last between 15 and 25 years when properly maintained. Walford Timber’s PermaTimber® pressure treatment carries a 15-year guarantee against fungal decay and wood-destroying insects. Hardwood gates made from iroko or oak can last considerably longer — often 30 years or more — with annual treatment. Softwood gates in slow-grown Scandinavian redwood generally last 15 to 20 years with regular staining or painting.

Can wooden gates be made to measure?

Yes. Walford Timber offers a fully bespoke, made-to-measure service. We can manufacture wooden gates to almost any width or height, including non-standard opening sizes common in older properties and heritage homes. Simply contact us with the opening dimensions, your preferred style, and any specific requirements, and we will produce a custom gate to your exact specifications.

What is the best wood for outdoor gates in the UK?

In the UK climate, the most suitable timbers for outdoor gates are pressure-treated Scandinavian redwood (a robust, cost-effective softwood), European oak (a dense hardwood with excellent natural durability), and iroko (a tropical hardwood prized for its resistance to moisture and decay). For most domestic gardens and driveways, pressure-treated redwood offers the best balance of performance, appearance, and value. Oak and iroko are recommended where longevity and minimal maintenance are the priority.

Do wooden driveway gates need planning permission?

In most cases, wooden driveway gates in England do not require planning permission, provided they are under two metres in height when positioned away from a highway, or under one metre when adjacent to a highway. However, permitted development rights can be removed in conservation areas, on listed buildings, or on properties where a planning condition restricts alterations. We recommend checking with your local planning authority before installation if in any doubt.

How much do wooden gates cost?

Wooden gates from Walford Timber start from £72.79 for a single pedestrian garden gate. Wooden driveway gates (also called entrance gates or double gates) typically range from £200 to £800 or more depending on width, style, and timber type. Bespoke or made-to-measure gates are priced on application. All prices include VAT and are available online or by contacting our sales team directly.

How do I maintain a wooden gate?

To maintain a wooden gate in good condition, clean the surface annually with a soft brush and mild detergent, then apply a quality timber preservative, stain, or paint. Inspect hinges, catches, and fixings each year for rust or wear. Walford Timber stocks a full range of timber treatments, stains, and eco-friendly wood paints for ongoing gate maintenance. Pressure-treated gates require less frequent attention than untreated timber but should still be treated every two to three years.

Do you deliver wooden gates across the UK?

Yes. Walford Timber offers nationwide delivery across England, Wales, and Scotland. Our products can be ordered online and delivered directly to your property. We also offer click-and-collect from our branches in Ross-on-Wye (Herefordshire), Cheltenham (Gloucestershire), and Chesham (Buckinghamshire).

How to look after wooden gates — a maintenance guide

Wooden gates require regular but straightforward maintenance to remain in good condition. With the right care routine, a pressure-treated wooden gate should last 15 to 25 years, and hardwood gates considerably longer. Here is what you need to do, and how often.

Annual maintenance tasks

Clean the gate surface

Use a soft-bristled brush and a mild detergent to remove algae, dirt, and moss. Allow the gate to dry fully before applying any treatment. Do not use a high-pressure washer at close range, as this can raise the wood grain and damage the surface finish.

Inspect hinges, latches, and catches

Check all metal fittings for signs of rust, loosening, or wear. Tighten any screws that have worked loose. Replace any fittings that are corroded or no longer functioning correctly. Well-maintained ironmongery significantly extends gate life by preventing the gate from dropping and warping at the hinge.

Apply timber treatment, stain, or paint

Apply a quality exterior timber treatment or wood stain every 2 to 3 years, or a wood paint every 3 to 5 years (depending on exposure). Work it into all surfaces, paying particular attention to the end grain at the bottom of the gate, which is the most vulnerable to moisture ingress. Walford Timber stocks Ronseal products and our own range of eco-friendly wood paints for this purpose.

Check the gate for movement and sag

Open and close the gate fully and check that it swings freely without dragging on the ground. A sagging gate puts strain on the latch post and can cause the gate to warp over time. If sagging occurs, the diagonal brace (the anti-sag bar running from the bottom-hinge corner to the top-latch corner) may need to be tightened or replaced.
