Hardwood Firewood
Seasoned hardwood firewood.
We have been working with timber at The Sawmills in Walford, just outside Ross-on-Wye, since 1945. As a local timber merchant and firewood supplier serving Ross-on-Wye, Hereford and the surrounding towns and villages, we hear the same questions every autumn. This guide answers them, from choosing the right logs to storing them properly through the winter.
Freshly felled wood can be more than half water by weight. When you burn it, much of the energy goes into boiling that water away rather than heating your home. The result is less warmth, more smoke and tar deposits building up in your flue and chimney.
For a clean, efficient burn, firewood should have a moisture content of 20% or less. In England, that is also the level set by the government’s Ready to Burn rules for wood sold in smaller quantities. Our customers across the border in Monmouthshire are not covered by the same law, but 20% is still the figure to aim for.
A simple moisture meter costs very little and tells you exactly where your logs stand. Split a log and test the freshly exposed face rather than the outside, which can read drier than the wood really is.
Seasoned logs are left to air dry, usually for a year or more. How dry they become depends on the wood, how it was stacked and the weather, and a wet Herefordshire winter can leave them damper than you would like.
Kiln dried logs are dried in a kiln, which brings the moisture down quickly and consistently. They light easily, burn hotter and produce less smoke and ash. That is why we sell kiln dried firewood: you know what you are getting, and the logs are ready to burn the day they arrive.
Hardwood such as oak, ash and beech is dense, burns slowly and gives out a steady heat, which makes it ideal for a long evening in front of the fire. Softwood catches quickly and burns fast, so it is best used as kindling to get a fire going. Most people start with softwood kindling and keep the fire going with hardwood logs.
From our timber yard in Walford we supply:
You can collect from the yard or order online for delivery. We deliver within 40 miles of our Walford branch, which covers Hereford, Ledbury, Leominster and the Golden Valley, the Forest of Dean towns of Coleford, Cinderford and Lydney, and Monmouth, Abergavenny, Chepstow and Pontypool across the Welsh border. Delivery costs are shown at checkout.
Even the driest logs will soak up moisture again if they are stored badly. Rain, damp ground and poor airflow are the three things to beat.
Choose a sunny, breezy spot that is easy to reach from the back door on a wet January night. Leave a small gap between the store and any wall or fence so air can circulate behind it, and avoid low spots where water collects after heavy rain. In the Wye Valley, where autumn mists and damp air hang about for days, good airflow matters even more.
A purpose built log store does all of the above for you. The Walford Log Store, from £299, is made from heavy duty pressure treated timber, with a slatted base and sides for airflow and a roof to keep the rain off. It arrives flat packed and goes together in an afternoon.
Pressure treatment is important here. A log store stands outside all year, often close to damp ground, so untreated timber will not last. If you would rather build your own, our yard stocks the sleepers, timber battens and roofing felt you will need.
Kindling needs to be bone dry, so keep it in a covered box or bag inside your log store, or indoors. Our bagged kindling is kiln dried and ready to use.
One important word of warning: never burn offcuts of pressure treated, painted or varnished timber. Treated wood can release harmful chemicals when burnt, and it is bad for your stove and chimney too. Keep those offcuts for the tip, and burn only clean, dry firewood.
Burning dry wood is the best thing you can do for your stove, but it still needs looking after. Have your chimney swept at least once a year, ideally before the heating season starts, and check the door seals and glass for wear. If you are thinking about a new stove, our partners at Green Man Stoves install wood burning and multi fuel stoves across Herefordshire.
While you are stocking up on logs, autumn is also one of the best times of year for garden projects. The ground is soft for digging post holes and plants are dying back, which makes it easier to get at old fencing.
Customers come to our Ross-on-Wye timber yard for fence panels made in our own British workshops, PermaTimber® posts with a 15 year guarantee, garden sheds and decking. We supply fencing to homes and farms across Ross-on-Wye, Hereford, Leominster, Ledbury and the Forest of Dean, and garden sheds throughout Herefordshire.
