How to protect your fence in winter

Your fencing is something that can easily be forgotten when it comes to maintenance, but there are some straightforward ways in order to keep it in tip-top shape for many years.

1. Overhanging branches

The first tip we’d like to share regards overhanging branches. Snow or other harsh weather conditions can weigh branches down over your fencing, which opens the fence up to the risk of moisture damage, wood rot or other issues such as discolouration if they aren’t addressed promptly.

2. Checking the stability of fence posts

Strong, sturdy fence posts are absolutely essential for the continued stability and security of your fence in any season, especially during winter. Moisture from rain and snow can soften the ground, making it important to check your fence posts are still held securely in place. This will help to make sure they are able to support the weight of your fence throughout the year.

3. Damaged fence panels

Regular maintenance such as this will help to prevent any damage from spreading to further parts of your fence, which would result in the whole thing weakening.

4. Treat the wood

A positive move is to coat your timber fencing with a high standard of treatment in order to maintain the quality and colour of the wood. This can help to minimise the risk of too much moisture getting into the wood.
