The single most common mistake in a drought is a quick daily sprinkle. It feels productive, but it only wets the top centimetre or two of soil, which does nothing for root systems and actually encourages roots to stay shallow and more vulnerable to drying out. Instead, follow these principles.
Water thoroughly, less frequently. Aim for once or twice a week rather than a daily splash, giving each plant enough to soak down 15 to 20cm.
Water at the base of the plant, not over the foliage. Overhead watering loses a large proportion to evaporation and does nothing for the roots.
Water early morning or late evening, when temperatures are lower and evaporation is minimal. Midday watering in full sun can lose a significant share of what you apply before it ever reaches the roots.
Use a watering can or drip irrigation over a sprinkler where you can. Sprinklers are the least efficient way to water a garden, as a large proportion drifts, evaporates or lands on paths rather than soil.
If you do one thing differently this summer, make it this. A layer of mulch across your beds dramatically slows evaporation from the soil surface, suppresses the weeds that would otherwise compete with your plants for the water that is there, and moderates soil temperature so roots are not sitting in overheated ground.
Bark and woodchip mulch is the most effective option for ornamental beds and borders. Laid five to seven centimetres deep once the soil is already moist (mulching dry soil just traps the dryness underneath), it can measurably cut how often you need to water for the rest of the season. For the best results, lay a geotextile membrane underneath before you mulch: it stops weeds pushing up through the bark while still letting water and air pass through to the soil, so you get the moisture-retention benefit of mulch without the maintenance burden of a bark bed that grows its own crop of weeds.
Grass clippings and garden compost work as a free mulch for vegetable beds, though they break down faster and need topping up more often than bark.
It seems counterintuitive that raised beds, which drain more freely than ground-level soil, would help in a drought. But the advantage is not in retaining more water overall; it is in control. A raised bed lets you fill it with a soil mix that holds moisture far better than whatever is naturally in your garden, particularly if your existing ground is heavy clay, which sheds water in a downpour and cracks in a drought, or thin, fast-draining sandy soil.
Mix good topsoil with well-rotted compost or organic matter when you fill a raised bed, and you get a growing medium that holds water in the root zone for longer than open ground, while still draining well enough that plants are not sitting waterlogged after a proper soak. It is also far easier to mulch a defined raised bed properly and keep that mulch layer in place, compared with a sprawling border where bark tends to migrate and thin out over a season.
Timber raised beds built from pressure-treated boards are simple to put together over a weekend, and building your own means you can size them to fit the space you actually have, rather than working around a fixed off-the-shelf footprint.
Water loss is not only about evaporation; it is also about runoff. On any kind of slope, or even a border with a slightly raised path alongside it, a heavy watering or downpour can run straight off the bed and onto the path before it soaks in where you actually want it.
Timber sleepers are the sturdiest way to solve this on a bigger scale. Used to build low retaining walls or terraced beds, they hold soil and water in place on sloped ground rather than letting both wash downhill. On a smaller scale, timber edging along a border does the same job in miniature: it keeps mulch from spreading onto the lawn or path, and stops surface water sheeting off the bed before it has had a chance to soak in. It is a small, inexpensive addition that makes every watering session more effective.
The lowest-effort way to drought-proof a garden long-term is to plant things that are naturally suited to dry conditions in the first place. UK gardens have plenty of good options that still look established and full rather than sparse and scrubby.
Lavender, rosemary and other Mediterranean herbs genuinely thrive on neglect once established, and most do worse with too much water than too little.
Sedum and other succulents store water in their leaves and stems, making them close to drought-proof once planted out.
Ornamental grasses, such as stipa or festuca, are deep-rooting and strikingly low-maintenance, and they move nicely in the wind, which most Mediterranean-style planting does not offer.
Achillea, verbena bonariensis and euphorbia are reliable, long-flowering, and well-suited to a gravel garden or raised bed with sharp drainage.
New plants of any species need regular watering for their first season regardless of their eventual drought tolerance. It is the establishment period that determines whether a ‘drought tolerant’ label actually holds true for your particular plant.
In a serious drought, be honest about where your water is best spent.
New and recently planted specimens, from this year or last year, have not developed the root systems to cope without help, so they are the priority.
Fruiting vegetables, such as tomatoes, courgettes and beans, suffer in yield and quality without consistent water, so they are worth prioritising over ornamentals if you are growing your own.
Established trees and shrubs can generally cope with a dry spell using their existing root systems and rarely need intervention unless the drought is prolonged and severe.
Lawns are usually the thing to let go. Grass turning brown in a drought is dormancy, not death; it is a survival mechanism, and it will green up again within a couple of weeks of proper rain returning. Watering a lawn through a serious drought is, water for water, one of the least efficient things you can do in the garden.
Where a hosepipe ban is in force, mains watering with a hose or sprinkler typically is not permitted at all, which makes stored rainwater your main option, and it is worth setting up properly rather than as an afterthought.
Position it next to a downpipe. You will need a flat, firm base, such as a paving slab, within about 50cm of the downpipe so a diverter hose can comfortably reach. A shed or greenhouse downpipe works just as well as one on the house.
Raise it off the ground. Standing the butt on a purpose-made stand, or simply a few bricks, leaves enough clearance to fit a watering can under the tap.
Fit a diverter kit. These are inserted directly into the downpipe and channel rainwater into the butt while it fills, then let any excess continue down to the drain once the butt is full, so there is no risk of overflow near the house.
Link more than one together. If you have the space, connecting two or three butts with a simple hose kit multiplies your storage for very little extra cost, and spreading smaller butts around the garden rather than relying on one large tank often makes day-to-day watering easier, since you are never far from a water source.
Keep it in the shade if you can. The RHS recommends siting a water butt out of direct sun, since cooler water is less prone to algae and bacterial growth, and a gutter guard or mesh filter over the inlet stops leaves and debris fouling the water.
Do not forget the greywater option. Washing-up water and bathwater, once cooled and free of strong detergents or bleach, can also be collected and reused on ornamental beds, though it is best avoided on edible crops.
Beyond the big structural changes, there are several smaller, low-cost tricks that experienced gardeners rely on during a dry spell. None of them requires specialist kit.
Fix hydrophobic compost with a drop of washing-up liquid. If compost has dried out completely, particularly in pots, water can start running straight down the inside of the container and out of the bottom without ever soaking in. Adding a small drop of washing-up liquid to your watering can acts as a wetting agent, breaking the water’s surface tension so it penetrates properly instead of beading off.
Bury a plastic bottle or unglazed clay pot next to thirsty plants. This is an old allotment trick known as an olla when done with clay. Sink a bottle with small holes pierced in the base (or a plant pot with the drainage hole intact) into the soil next to a tomato plant or a newly planted shrub, then fill it with water. It seeps out slowly and directly at root level, well below the surface where evaporation is fastest.
Group container plants together. Pots dry out faster than open ground because they are exposed on all sides, so clustering them together, ideally in part-shade during the hottest part of the day, reduces the combined surface area exposed to sun and wind, and each pot helps shade its neighbours.
Raise your mower blade. Cutting a lawn shorter in summer feels tidy, but longer grass shades its own roots and the soil beneath it, which slows moisture loss significantly. Simply raising the cutting height a notch or two through a dry spell keeps a lawn greener for longer without any extra watering at all.
Skip the fertiliser during a drought. Feeding plants encourages fresh, soft growth that then needs more water to sustain, which works against you when supply is already tight. Hold off on feeding until conditions ease.
Focus on the structural changes rather than the daily watering can: mulch, raised beds with a good soil mix, and edging or sleepers to stop runoff all keep working season after season with no extra effort from you. Combine that with drought-tolerant planting and you will find you need to actively rescue the garden far less often, even in a below-average rainfall year.
Mediterranean planting has a reputation for looking sparse, but it does not have to. Layer taller ornamental grasses behind lower-growing sedum and lavender, and use a raised bed or sleeper-edged border to give the planting a defined, intentional shape rather than letting it look like an abandoned patch. A well-mulched bed also looks considerably tidier than bare soil, whatever is growing in it.
Start with the beds that dry out fastest, usually anything in full sun, near a wall that reflects heat, or on a slope. Mulch those first, add edging to stop water running off, and prioritise drought-tolerant planting there specifically. You do not need to convert the whole garden at once; targeting the worst-affected areas first gives you the best return for the least effort.
None of these changes need to happen all at once, and you do not need a complete garden overhaul to see a difference this summer. If you are starting from scratch, the highest-impact order is usually this: mulch what you have already got, add edging or a sleeper retaining wall anywhere water currently runs off rather than soaking in, then build out raised beds for anything you are planting fresh. Combined with deeper, less frequent watering and a planting palette that does not fight the conditions, most gardens can get through a dry summer looking considerably better than the ‘watering restrictions in force’ state most people assume is inevitable.
